Promising help in the mating game, a new Trojan virus similar to the "Melissa" bug is proliferating quickly across the Internet, computer security specialists cautioned this week.

The sneaky worm, disguised as a love matching program, spreads via e-mail, sending itself as an attachment twice to all addresses in an infected user's Windows Address book, according to Trend Micro. Often distributed as e-mail attachments, Trojan viruses are harmful programs disguised as something innocuous.

Antivirus software companies said a new virus that disguises itself as a program for finding romance partners is spreading quickly between companies in Europe.

Companies say the virus, known as Matcher.A, is less potent than the I Love You virus that ravaged computer systems last May, but it could pose a nuisance by overloading mail servers
internationally.

A virus that monitors a PC's network connections and sends itself in response to any incoming e-mail has apparently failed to spread, despite, or because of, warnings issued by several major antivirus software makers. "We initially gave it a medium rating, but we expect to downgrade that today," Susan Orbuch, spokeswoman for antivirus company Trend Micro, said Friday.

Though several of Trend Micro's customers reported receiving e-mailed copies of the virus, only three companies were actually infected, Orbuch said.

security of Linux systems and send information identifying the compromised systems to four
different e-mail addresses hosted on servers in China and the United States. The worm seems very similar to the Ramen Worm seen a few months back. Full story is here.

Central Command announced discovery of the 'W32.Winux' virus today. The virus is said to be the first known cross platform virus as Linux machines can infect Windows binaries and vice versa. The virus propagates by attaching itself to executable files. The Winux virus is said to be primarily a proof-of-concept and is not in the wild on the Internet.
