Virus Security Industry Complains of Gatekeeper Competition
Saw this over at SNN
It appears as though Gatekeeper is going the way of many security product companies these days by offering a prize for anyone who can bypass their virus protection product. In a world where security is a constantly moving target, product companies have had a hard time proving their claims of security and differentiating their products from the competition. Unlike similar events for secure operating systems, copyright protection schemes or cryptography products, anti-virus companies are complaining that this competition poses a serious threat to computer users by rewarding virus writing. Whether the lure of $10,000 will encourage or create a new generation of virus writers is open to debate. As we all know, people have been writing computer viruses long before there was any prize money to be had. In the end, the greatest risk of this competition may be to Gatekeeper itself.
