AMD's Hammer goes graphics crazy

AMD is spinning up the sales story for its bifurcated 64-bit chip brands, the Opteron and the Athlon (as its uniprocessor version is to be called).

It'll be several months before any of the damn things reach the public, but that won't stop AMD's PR bunnies from teasing out the announcements.

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices said Thursday that it expects the next major public update for the Linux operating system to include support for the company's x86-64 technology--the basis for its next generation of processors, known as the Hammer family.

Intel to demo fanless, cool 5GHz chip

CHIP GIANT INTEL confirmed the large caches it will include on future versions of the Itanium and has also further explained its tie in with Ovonics on these chips, first revealed here some months ago.

Intel is delivering eleven papers at the Solid State conference. Along with this, Intel has now formally released details of the 3MB cache on chip which it claims will deliver 1.5 to two times performance over the current designs.
