Ethical hacker faces war driving charges

A Houston computer security analyst has been charged with hacking after demonstrating the insecurity of a county courts wireless LAN.

Stefan Puffer, 33, was indicted by a Grand Jury on Wednesday with two counts of fraud for allegedly breaking into Harris County district clerk's wireless computer system. It's believed to be the first case of its kind in the US.

A MAN who defrauded internet auction shoppers out of more than $US100,000 ($180,000) was sentenced to 12 years in prison in what prosecutors said could be the stiffest penalty ever for such an offence.

Prosecutors today said Thomas Houser fooled 268 eBay and Yahoo! shoppers.

The Law Society of Scotland is attempting to reverse hijack the domain www.lawscot.co.uk, claiming that its current owner, Mr Tommy Butler, is "passing off" and wrongly receiving private and confidential emails.

Mr Butler and the UK domain arbitrator Nominet have both been served with a 10-page court order, suspending the domain until the court has reached a decision.

Woman charged with breaking into company's e-mail system

Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly has filed charges against a Middleton, Mass., woman, accusing her of hacking into her former boss' computer system and forwarding confidential e-mails to former co-workers.
According to a statement issued by Reilly's office, Wendy Sholds, 38, faces two counts of unauthorized access to a computer system. She is scheduled to be arraigned July 1 in Salem District Court.

Microsoft Files Written Defense

Microsoft on Monday laid out its defense in the antitrust case pursued by nine states, arguing that the states are entitled to no penalties stricter than those the company agreed to in its settlement with the federal government last year.
The Microsoft document, well over 500 pages, summarizes the points the company made in two months of testimony and arguments earlier this year. It is the last step before closing arguments in the case, scheduled for June 19.

CBI registers a Case Against AIC (Anti India Crew) for hacking CBEC website

The Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of CBI has registered a case u/s 66 of Information Technology Act, 2000 for the hacking of the web site of Customs and Central Excise (www.cbec.gov.in). This case has been registered on the basis of a written complaint received from the Department. This site was hacked on 01.04.2002 by a Hacker group identified as Anti India Crew. The hacker was able to change only the home page of the web site and the hack was detected immediately.

State senators said Tuesday they would investigate why it took weeks for 260,000 government employees to be notified that a hacker accessed a computer system containing their personal financial information.

"There's a lot of people screaming," said Dennis Alexander of the Professional Engineers in California Government.

Kimble/Schmitz gets 20 months suspended sentence

German glam-hax0r Kim Schmitz (aka Kimble) has received a 20 month suspended sentence from a Munich court after being convicted of stock price manipulation designed to net him €1.2m (£750,000).

Schmitz, who was extradited from Thailand in January after a botched attempt to flee justice, was also fined €100,000 by the court after pleading guilty to insider trading of shares in Letsbuyit.com.
