A MAN who defrauded internet auction shoppers out of more than $US100,000 ($180,000) was sentenced to 12 years in prison in what prosecutors said could be the stiffest penalty ever for such an offence.

Prosecutors today said Thomas Houser fooled 268 eBay and Yahoo! shoppers.

Houser, of Fairfax, Virginia, offered electronics, watches, paintball guns and other goods on both web sites through the Houser Family Store. The items did not exist, prosecutors said.
