Trial-date set for Russian eBook ‘hackers’

A US federal judge has set August 26 as the date for the opening of the trial against Russian software company ElcomSoft.

The Moscow software company developed and distributed software that enabled users to circumvent the copyright protection in Adobe’s eBook file format. It is being charged under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

DrinkOrDie Leader Gets Four Years

The ringleader of a software piracy group known as DrinkOrDie today was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for his role in a "warez" operation that caused millions of dollars in damages, federal prosecutors said.
In U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va., John Sankus, Jr., 28, of Philadelphia, was handed a 46-month sentence on a single felony count of conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement.

Argentina's Supreme Court wants legislation to outlaw computer hacking after rights activists allegedly vandalized its own Web site but escaped punishment because no law covers digital attacks.
A federal court threw out a case in April against a group of hackers, known as the "X-Team," who were charged with defacing the site in 1998 with accusations the South American nation's top judges covered up the murder of a journalist.

ISP Can Finally Disconnect Spammer, Court Rules

After more than a year of battling with bulk e-mailer MonsterHut, a Rochester-based Internet service provider (ISP) has been given permission by a New York State appeals court to disconnect the company it says is a notorious spammer.
The decision Friday reversed lower court rulings last year that kept MonsterHut.com online even though PaeTec Communications of Fairport, N.Y., near Rochester, said MonsterHut had contravened its anti-spam policy.

Adobe wins patent infringement suit against Macromedia

The web design software market suffered a change in the balance of power, probably temporary, yesterday, after a jury found Macromedia Inc software infringes upon a US patent held by rival Adobe Inc. Adobe was awarded damages of about $2.8m, and said it expects to be awarded an injunction against further infringement.

Paris court agrees to firm's independent look at voting system
A Paris court has agreed to give media conglomerate Vivendi the opportunity to independently examine the wireless voting system which it claims was hacked following the vote results of a recent shareholder meeting.
Vivendi and two of the company's largest shareholders, Compagnie de Saint-Gobain SA and Societe Generale, jointly filed the petition with the Paris Commercial Court. The court hearing was held on Thursday (yesterday).

Hacker Pleads Guilty To Accessing NASA System

A hacker charged last year with breaking into a NASA server has pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court in San Antonio to one count of intentionally accessing a federal computer without authorization, NASA said Monday. He faces a possible one-year jail term and a $100,000 fine.

Ruben Candelario, who entered his plea April 18, is scheduled to be sentenced June 20.
