Threat Intelligence, an Australian security consultancy specialising in the next era of intelligence-based threat management and penetration testing, today announced that it has been selected to run its cutting-edge “Practical Threat Intelligence” course at the prestigious Hack In The Box Security Conference (“HITBSecConf”) in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, October 13 – 16 October 2014.
 

Botnets coming soon to a smart home or automated building near you

At Hack in the Box (HITB) security conference in Amsterdam, Steffen Wendzel, head of Fraunhofer FKIE, presented "Alice's Adventures in Smart Building Land – Novel Adventures in a Cyber Physical Environment"(pdf). This wasn't "just" weaponizing your coffee pot. Brace yourself because Wendzel warned that a new class of botnet is coming. In fact, smart building botnets won’t be used for boring things like denial-of-service attacks or even refrigerators sending spam.

In the maritime business, Automated Identification Systems (AIS) are a big deal. They supplement information received by the marine radar system, are used for a wide variety of things - including ship-to-ship communication - and are relied upon each and every day. Unfortunately, the AIS can also be easily hacked in order to do some real damage, claims a group of researchers presenting at the Hack In The Box Conference currently taking place in Kuala Lumpur.
