Apple dubs iPod touch 'best portable' for gaming

Apple's self-proclaimed "funnest iPod ever," the iPod touch, launched with a new message and a slew of new games that put the portable device in direct competition with the DS and PSP.

The proclamation came during one of Apple's annual "big reveals," where outspoken CEO Steve Jobs usually demonstrates new technology and software for an enamored tech journalist audience.

Apple, the consumer electronics giant, on Tuesday rolled out new versions of its popular iPod music player, but failed to deliver the surprises that finicky investors have come to expect.

The new iPod line announced by CEO Steve Jobs at a press event in San Francisco, which Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) dubbed "Let's Rock." Among other things, Jobs cut the price on the year-old iPod Touch and unveiled a new Nano video player.

Wall Street will look for signs Tuesday that Apple can maintain its strong sales growth amid a weakening consumer market, but will also pay close attention to the physical appearance of chief executive Steve Jobs.

In a note to clients on Monday, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said he's confident the Apple co-founder will be on hand to personally take the wraps of the company's new line of iPod digital media players and other products, which should reassure shareholders and, in turn, boost Apple shares.

Dimensional drawings said to depict Apple's next-generation digital media players suggest the company is about to unveil its thinnest iPod nano yet alongside a new version of the iPod touch that will be marginally thicker than its predecessor.

The drawings, published over at iLounge, show an iPod nano that will mark a return of the tall and narrow form factor, checking in at 0.75mm taller, 1.25mm narrower, and 0.42mm thinner than the second-generation iPod nanos introduced during the fall of 2006.
