Is Time Machine all you need?

Although any backup is better than no backup at all, Time Machine may not protect your data to the extent or in the way that you need. A few significant weaknesses offset its impressive strengths.

Time Machine copies the files on your computer to a destination you designate—an external hard drive, a second drive inside your Mac, an extra partition on your internal hard disk, a network server, or Apple’s new Time Capsule device. Then, once an hour, the program runs again, updating your backup to include whatever files have changed since last time.

You’ll remember NetShare, the iPhone tethering app that showed up on the App Store a couple of times before vanishing, seemingly forever. The advantage of a tethering app for users is that they could use their iPhone as a modem for their laptop or PC, in a pinch.

The disadvantage for the carrier is all the additional bandwidth required, quite naturally.

Apple’s iPhone is touting itself as being ultra-secure. With Steve Jobs’ hand hovering over the iPhone app kill switch, and enterprise customers given the ability to wipe iPhones remotely, we can all sleep soundly at night. At least we could, until the latest gigantic loophope was discovered…

Apply a lock to your iPhone, and it’ll ask you for a four-digit passcode. However, it’ll also let you make an emergency call. Go into the menu to dial the emergency number, perform a quick double-click on the ‘home’ button, and your phone’s favourites menu will appear.

Apple details next-gen multi-touch techniques for tablet Macs

In a revised company filing discovered by AppleInsider, iPhone maker Apple Inc. illustrates a number of techniques that would pave the way for tablet Macs that display a near full-sized multi-touch keyboard and run an undiluted version of the Mac OS X operating system.

Much of the 52-page filing describes methods for accurately detecting and deciphering a plurality of simultaneous contacts on a touch screen, which sets the foundation for future tablet-based products that users can manipulate using not only more than one finger, but more than one hand.

Hackintosh maker vows to bite back at Apple

Psystar, the company that sells open systems capable of running Mac OS X, plans to fight back against the copyright infringement lawsuit Apple has filed against it.

The Miami-based firm said during a press conference this afternoon it plans to challenge Apple's long-standing licensing ban on running the Mac operating system on non-Apple branded devices.

This version provides support for iPhone/iPod firmware 2.0.2 5C1, it has an updated Installer.app beta (b6) and contains a new .de localization for our large amount of German friends. The application SHOULD ONLY be downloaded as a .tbz file from our servers and should NOT be decompressed using the application called “the unarchiver” (this breaks permissions within PwnageTool) just use the standard OS X built in ‘Archive Utility’ to decompress.

Apple again used a Friday to provide its developer community with new pre-release software for testing during the weekend, including new builds of Mac OS X 10.5.5 client, Mac OS X 10.5.5 server, and Safari 4.0.

People familiar with the beta releases say a fourth external build of the company's Mac OS X 10.5.5 update landed as build 9F23, which addressed three minor issues, one of which pertained to Mail.app and home directory search.
