With the release of iOS 4.0.1 on Thursday, Apple instated changes to the way its iPhone handsets visualize bars representing cellular signal strength, doing away with a previously optimistic approach that compressed the dynamic range of bars to make it appear that a user's reception was much stronger than it actually was.

It's been a second bad weekend for Apple Computer, following another alleged app-driven hack of its iTunes store. A report from a Danish software security firm says Apple computers now run the most vulnerable software, and Mozilla Firefox has more vulnerabilities than other popular browsers.

Secunia, which offers security consulting and software to business, outlined the number of common vulnerabilities and exposures, or CVEs, in its half year report for 2010. The company ranked vendors against each other according to how many vulnerabilities they had. The firm also looked at programs from Microsoft, Apple and third parties.

Has it really come to this?

The most talked-about phone in the U.S. -- Apple's iPhone 4 -- has a design flaw that's best fixed with a sliver of duct tape, according to Consumer Reports. "It may not be pretty, but it works," writes Mike Gikas on that nonprofit consumer group's electronics blog.

The patch -- which sounds like it'd be more appropriate for kitchen plumbing than for a phone that retails for $200 to $300, plus an AT&T contract -- is supposed to correct an apparent problem with the iPhone 4's metal antenna.

I can only assume that life for Steve Jobs is getting worse by the day. At least it must be if he cares about the image of Apple as a provider of quality products, or if he cares about treating his customers openly and fairly. But it’s also possible that he doesn’t care at all as long as he’s hailed for creating the coolest products on the planet. As long as it’s cool, who cares if it works?
