Apple releases tool to create external Lion recovery drives

What do you do if you purchased Lion from the Mac App Store, have no installation disc or USB key, and are suddenly faced with a hard drive catastrophe? In lieu of begging Apple for your very own Lion recovery drive, you can now run Apple's Lion Recovery Disk Assistant. The tool, released Monday, allows users to create a Lion recovery partition on an external drive in the event of a hard drive crash.

Skype update for Mac adds Lion support, HD calls

Microsoft-borged Skype says it has outed a new version of Skype for Apple's OSX that will support the weird new Lion update as well as allow Macintoshers to make HD Video Calls

Skype 5.3 for Mac OS X also includes a number of fixes and improvements to the user interface, the outfit said. The update is reckoned to be backwards compatible with past versions of OS X, back as far as Leopard.

Apple Releases iOS 5 Beta 5 and iTunes 10.5 Beta 5 to Developers

Two weeks after releasing iOS 5 Beta 4, Apple has now pushed a fifth beta out to developers. You can grab iOS 5 Beta 5 with your registered developer account in the Dev Center, and the update can also be received as an over-the-air update on a device running iOS 5 Beta 4.

If you’re wondering about what’s new in Beta 5, the answer is not much. It is worth noting that, in order to perform an OTA update to iOS 5 Beta 5, you will need to have backed up your device through iCloud.

Steve Jobs Slowly Beginning to Let Go of the Reins at Apple

Steve Jobs has always been considered the heart and soul of Apple. He’s the man that has brought us Apple’s most successful products of the last decade, including the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. He’s been the face of Apple for years, and he’s seen as an industry innovator and pioneer.

Since his third medical leave of absence in January of this year, Jobs has begun to slowly let go of the reins at Apple. He’s still very much in control, but the ‘Age of Jobs’ is drawing to an end.

Retailers dropping prices on iPhone ahead of impending update

Some retailers have begun marking down the price of the iPhone 4, suggesting stock clearing measures have begun in anticipation of an expected hardware update. While most recent rumors have suggested a September launch, however, some recent buzz indicates that the next iPhone might not emerge until October. Still, in light of the markdowns, September seems a more likely candidate.
