As it plans push into SME market
Sun has shown it is determined to overcome recent unrest in its channel by announcing a reseller recruitment drive to support its Linux push into the SME arena, following the launch of its first Linux server.
The vendor has had to counter allegations from some channel players that its channel model was "not working". It has also clamped down on resellers selling 'unauthorised' imports.

Say what you will, but most people will agree that Mac OS X has a killer GUI. While Linux proponents will decry the eye candy and OS 9 fanatics will cry that their favorite feature was left out or ruined in OS X, most people would agree that Aqua is a major step forward in creating an interactive desktop. Unfortunately, you can only run OSX on proprietary and relatively expensive hardware.

One of the most attractive things about Linux is the number of installation options one is presented with and how tempting it is to customize. But for a newbie, in terms of Web security and PC hygiene, that's also the worst thing about it. The fact is, Windows is easier than Linux for a casual user to make fairly secure, whereas Linux is easier than Windows for a power user to make very secure.

reaper: Sweet Glad someone is setting the bar higher
An Illinois company that has shipped Linux preloaded on PCs since 1998 now offers a choice of four Linux distributions on Apple machines, the company has announced.
QliTech Linux Computers will ship Apple notebook and desktop systems with SuSE PPC, Mandrake PPC, Debian PPC, or Gentoo PPC configured to dual boot with OS-X, says QliTech's Ray Sanders.

The second IBM Linux Scholar Challenge is accepting registrations through October 31. Finished projects are due by December 13. On January 20, 2003, IBM will announce the winners of 20 ThinkPad laptops, and will offer summer internships at IBM's Linux Technology Center to three of the top winners.

According to a new survey, open-source software developers are mostly men in their twenties, and they vastly favor the Debian operating system distribution. The "Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS)" report also found that although many might not make a living from their open-source activities, they spend a serious amount of time on them.

A couple nights ago while attempting to install a program on a Windows ME Sony VAIO laptop, it fritzed out on me and wouldn't re-boot. It was something about a "missing or corrupt vmm32.vxd file." The lonely little c> prompt didn't give much hope.
