How Linux Could Become the Next Killer Desktop
Source: OS Opinion
Say what you will, but most people will agree that Mac OS X has a killer GUI. While Linux proponents will decry the eye candy and OS 9 fanatics will cry that their favorite feature was left out or ruined in OS X, most people would agree that Aqua is a major step forward in creating an interactive desktop. Unfortunately, you can only run OSX on proprietary and relatively expensive hardware.
On the other hand, we have KDE and GNOME, which in themselves have done a great deal to make Linux more accessible to the common person. Without the efforts of these two GUI projects, open source software would still be useable only on servers, embedded devices and by way of the command line on the desktop.
However, even the most pro-Linux supporter cannot deny that while these projects have made Linux useful on the desktop, little headway has been made in bringing open source desktops to the masses.
