PS3 Update Brings PlayStation Plus And Facebook

Sony has released the new system software update v3.04 for its PlayStation 3 (PS3) games console.

The update will bring Facebook integration to the console, as well as launching Sony's new premium PlayStation Network (PSN) service, PlayStation Plus.

The VideoLAN project is shipping version 1.1 of its open source VLC media player, adding hardware acceleration, WebM support, and faster HD decoding, but deleting Shoutcast support. Meanwhile, several industry reports suggest possible reasons for Adobe's temporary suspension of its beta 64-bit Linux version of Flash.

Available for Linux, Mac, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 computers, the new version of the open source VLC media player is most notable for offering hardware accelerated GPU (graphics processing unit) decoding on all but the Mac platform.

Google remotely removes Android apps

Google disclosed in a blog post on Thursday that it remotely removed two applications from Android phones that ran contrary to the terms of the Android Market.

A security researcher built and offered the free applications "for research purposes," wrote Rich Cannings, Android security lead, in the blog post. The application descriptions misrepresented their purpose in order to encourage downloads, he said.

Based in Sweden, Rebtel--which claims to be the world's largest independent mobile VoIP provider--may not be familiar to many users, but this app may change that.

Google publishes Android 2.2 source code

In a brief blog post, Google has announced that it has released the entirety of the source code for Froyo, better known as Android 2.2, under an open-source license. The open-source aspect of the release isn't new -- all previous platform iterations have been open-sourced too -- but there are a few extra modules in Froyo that have been opened up that had previously been closed-source.

HTC Desire to get Android 2.2 in two weeks?

HTC has reportedly told customers that the Desire smartphone will be getting Android 2.2, aka Froyo, within two weeks.

The over-the-air update was initially meant to be with customers by today, according to rumours circulating the internet in May. This new rumour is based on an email HTC sent to a customer wanting to know when the update would be happening.

VLC media player gets updated to 1.1 offering host of new features

The free to use media player, encoder and streamer VLC has been updated by it makers VideoLAN. For anyone not familiar with VLC, it is an extremely useful open source tool for downloading and, more to the point, watching video on your PC.

The new 1.1 update, for PC, Mac and Linux, gets a host of new features in order to keep the media player at the top of its game. Improvements include support for encoding HTML5 video, GPU decoding for anything running Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Linux - however you'll have to be running on an Nvidia GPU to take advantage.

Google 'to integrate PDF into browser'

Google's plan to integrate PDF into its Chrome browser will make life easier to end users, some of whom take IT courses to learn about such formats.

That's according to Shane Wright, the IT director of eDigitalResearch. Mr Wright added: "The most significant thing to take from this is Google's positioning as leading the way in browser development, and in end-user experience of rich web content."

The iPhone Dev Team deserves a round of applause. It has worked hard to make sure that iPhone users interested in more than the scripted Apple and AT&T experience can do so. It has released various updates to its PwnageTool and the latest will work with iOS4. There are a lot of caveats, though.
