Company adds Direct3D support to Wine.

TransGaming Technologies has managed to put Direct3D support into Wine, under
the name WineX, at least according to this article over at Newsforge. Sounds pretty interesting, and the company is also willing to help others port their games to Linux as well. If this actually works out, it may signal the end of users saying 'I can't play my games on Linux! That's why I use Windows'.

Sony has confirmed that they are indeed working on a version of Linux for their Playstation 2 game console, but it will only be compatible with Japanese versions of the console at this stage. According to Sony, the move is in response to consumer pressure, which has included online petitions.

GNOME, KDE put Linux on the desktop--almost

Exhibiting steady improvement over previous versions, The GNOME Project's GNOME 1.4 and KDE Project's KDE 2.1.1 each go a long way toward making Linux a viable replacement for Windows on mainstream corporate desktops. But neither desktop interface has yet reached parity with the established players—pervasive support for features such as cut and paste across the interface can still be unpredictable.

Linux-Mandrake 8.0 Beta 3 released.

The Linux-Mandrake crew have released another beta of their great Linux distro. Included in this version are kernel 2.4.2, KDE 2.1.1, and the latest offerings from Gnome and Nautilus. Unfortunately, the page doesn't offer a list of anything that was fixed from Beta 1 or 2. Check it out here. D/L at your own risk, since this is beta, and Linux.

According to this article at EE Times, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is developing a voice/data unit for infantry soldiers based on multiple StrongARM processors and embedded Linux. The radios will link together in what is characterized as a "mobile, ad-hoc, peer-to-peer network that uses frequency-hopping technology to avoid communication intercepts and location-finding capability.
