iPhone gets first free app for encrypting voice calls

An open-source project has released the first free application for the iPhone that scrambles voice calls, which would thwart government surveillance or eavesdropping by hackers.

Signal comes from Open Whisper Systems, which developed RedPhone and TextSecure, both Android applications that encrypt calls and text messages.

Apple preparing 70M to 80M combined iPhone 6 units for biggest launch ever

Citing sources familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal reports Apple is asking suppliers to produce between 70 million and 80 million 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 models by the end of December, the biggest initial handset order in company history.

As noted by the publication, the supposed order is much larger than the initial production run for combined iPhone 5s and 5c models, which came out to between 50 million and 60 million units in 2013.

Coming via Taiwanese website Apple.Club.Tw, the single photo purportedly shows a 4.7-inch display cover bound for Apple's next-generation iPhone 6. Unlike recent "leaks," Thursday's includes what appears to be metal bracket hardware and EMI shielding for the LCD and Touch ID home button.

It appears the part has no LCD installed, however, as the hand of the person holding it can be seen through the glass.

iPhone scammers allegedly use homeless to profit in Apple stores

It all seems so blatant.

In footage, all shot on an iPhone, we see what are said to be homeless people or the very poor walking into Apple stores and buying iPhones.

For this, they are allegedly rewarded in cash. The phones, as KUSA in Denver reports, are sent overseas, where, unlocked, they fetch far more money.

Apple launches cheaper 8GB iPhone 5C, but not in the US

Apple is adding a cheaper 8GB iPhone 5C to its smartphone lineup. The new model first appeared on UK carrier O2's site, but has since been added to a number of international Apple Stores including the UK, Australia, and China. In the UK, it's priced at £429, £40 ($66 including sales tax) less than the 16GB model. At the moment, it hasn't been announced in the US where the price would likely fall somewhere around $499.
