Intel Ships Multi-Core Server Platforms

Intel Corporation today announced the availability of its first dual-core, hyper-threaded Intel Xeon processors for entry-level dual processor servers. The new processors help to improve the performance and response time of multi-threaded server applications.

"The availability of our first dual-core server platforms accelerates the delivery of Intel's aggressive multi-core server roadmap, giving CIOs and IT managers innovative new technologies and capabilities to help grow and transform their business," said Kirk Skaugen, general manager of Intel's Server Platforms Group.

Intel conducts WiMAX trials in Southeast Asia

Intel Corporation recently announced the Asian Broadband Campaign, a pan-regional program aimed at accelerating wireless broadband deployment in Southeast Asian countries. Intel is providing its extensive broadband wireless expertise, silicon and technical services for governments, telecommunications regulators, education, health and agriculture public sector agencies, and carriers including True Corporation in Thailand, and TM Net in Malaysia to help them prepare for and conduct WiMAX trials.

Intel's latest rallying cry seems to be "Save the battery!"

The chipmaking giant announced on Monday a new technique that it said could help cut back on wasted battery power in cell phones and mobile devices by as much as 1,000 times current levels.

Active computing accounts for only half the power Intel processors use. The other half is gobbled up by a leakage current in transistors that exists when a machine is in a low-level sleep state, Intel said.

Intel buys into Czech security firm

Intel has acquired a $16m stake in Czech antivirus company Grisoft in its largest central European investment to date.

Grisoft sells security packages for Windows and Linux mostly for small businesses and home users.

Its flagship product is the popular AVG Anti-Virus which includes a built-in firewall in the enterprise edition. Cut-down versions are available free to home users.

Intel Corp. is moving on multiple fronts to help keep businesses one step ahead of worms and viruses. The chipmaker's research arm has stepped up its security focus of late. Earlier this week, Intel researchers released to open source an early version of software called Autograph that helps to quickly identify Internet worms and curb their ability to spread.

Its Intel Capital arm, meanwhile, has invested in Grisoft, a security software maker based in Prague, Czech Republic.

Intel Enters Anti-Virus Market

Intel is branching into anti-virus security with a $16 million investment in Czech anti-virus software vendor Grisoft. Grisoft’s AVG anti-virus is used on more than 25 million computers worldwide, according to the company.

Intel said its investment will help the software to reach a wider market and approach new customers. The company’s product is already distributed through resellers worldwide and through the Internet.

Intel working with Skype

INTEL says it is working with Skype Technologies to help improve the most widely used internet phone call service's software.

Intel engineers are helping to modify Skype's program to make it work better on new microprocessors that carry out multiple tasks simultaneously, says Intel vice-president Patrick Gelsinger.

"Why is Skype interesting? It is the market share leader," Gelsinger said at Intel's Developer Forum conference in San Francisco today.

Intel demos worm cut-off technology

Intel researchers have demonstrated a new hardware system designed to rapidly and automatically quarantine PCs infected with worms of viruses.

Announced at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), the Manageability Engine technology - internally referred to as Circuit Breaker - is designed to monitor the number of connections being made by a PC, and assess the integrity of the machine's security software.

Intel takes aim at computer cable madness

Intel announced two new initiatives Wednesday that could help computer users get rid of the "rat's nest" of cables behind their desks.

The chipmaker, which made the announcement during the Intel Developer Forum here, is one of several companies that have been trying to make the Wireless Universal Serial Bus specification more common to PCs and other consumer electronics. Similar to USB cables, the wireless version of the interconnect technology lets people easily connect a device with PCs and other gear.
