Intel has acquired a $16m stake in Czech antivirus company Grisoft in its largest central European investment to date.

Grisoft sells security packages for Windows and Linux mostly for small businesses and home users.

Its flagship product is the popular AVG Anti-Virus which includes a built-in firewall in the enterprise edition. Cut-down versions are available free to home users.

Arvind Sodhani, president of Intel Capital, the vendor's investment arm, said: "Under the terms of the strategic co-operation agreement with Grisoft, Intel will help Grisoft improve security on computing platforms for small businesses and consumers."

Grisoft has around 25 million users running its software worldwide, and is expected to use the cash to continue overseas development.
