Virus Alert: W32.Kriz

It started back in August of 1999, a small and relatively harmless little virus named w32.Kriz started affecting MS
Windows Operating systems. Kriz, named after Jolly Ole Saint Nick, remains inactive 364 days out of the year. Though
now it's time for alot of users to be worried as this bad boy is set to strike on December 25th.

We heard a lot about "The Love Bug" or "I Love You" virus which found its way into the world during the month of May this year. Numerous users, hoping to find emotional bliss in its "I Love You" or "Love Letter" subject headers found emotional distress instead as they helplessly turn victim to the virus.

But most of us would be wrong to assume that "The Love Bug" is the most devastating virus of the year. Indeed, it's the most publicised. But it's probably the most overrated as well.

Shockwave virus upgraded to high risk

Saw this over at IDG:

The Shockwave virus that disguises itself as a Shockwave Flash movie is gaining traction among corporations around the world, and at least one anti-virus software vendor upgraded the virus to "high risk" Friday afternoon.

Pro-Linux Trojan

There's a story making the rounds about a Pro Linux Virus. Well, it's being called a virus when in actuality its a trojan that's embedded in e-mails. It's not really malicious, it renames zip files and jpges to have a Pro-Linux message. Perhaps not the best way to spread the word - but I guess it works.

MTX virus gaining speed in unusual ways

The three-month-old MTX virus appears to be gaining speed, with several anti-virus vendors escalating the pesky bug to a medium-level threat in recent weeks.

The increased worries stem from a particularly harmful feature in which the virus blocks users from anti-virus Websites, stopping them from downloading virus protection updates and from issuing warnings...

Saw this over at HNN

A virus nicknamed Romeo and Juliet has been detected and could pose a serious threat once it gains momentum, warned the software company who discovered it. According to GFI, current anti-virus software may not be able to detect this specific strain, which must be blocked at the server level to avoid a proliferation a la Love Bug style. We recommend that email filtering vendors tune their rulesets to check for iambic pentameter.

There's a new virus out according to securityfocus called Navidad (meaning Christmas in Spanish) that messes with your mind (imagine that!). Eitherways, its rated "Medium On Watch" by Mcafee so keep a look out. Check out the whole story here

Gateway finds bug in Thunderbird systems

Saw this one over at Arstechnica
"While technical details are sparse, News.Com is reporting that Gateway has found a glitch in "some" 1GHz
TB Athlon-based systems. It isn't clear if the CPU or some other component is implicated, but when you
reflect on the mobo compatibility claims issued against the KX133 and whatnot, it looks like AMD may have
