I just wanted to let you know that there is a brand new hack for Kazaa and Kazaa Lite (2.0.2). It patches the code in memory, so that it doesn't hog up either bandwidth or RAM. It even lets you 'freeze' your participation level so that it doesn't decrease!

You can check it out at here.

In disturbing news this week Cablevision's high speed broadband unit OptimumOnline has sent letters to subscribers warning that uploading to P2P networks will no longer be tolerated. Obviously bowing to record and movie industry pressure the letter includes a link to a page that gives directions on how to disable file trading on 18 P2P services from KaZaa to Xolox. If you don't comply, they will cut the cord. I remember not to long ago where OptimumOnline ran TV ads touting the ability to grab music from the Net.

P2p is swamping some broadband networks, says Sandvine Inc, a new Canadian company. KaZaA, Morpheus and the like ignore logical ISP network topologies, resulting in ad hoc connects with P2P clients on other networks and a tendency to push data traffic 'off net,' which in turn drives up Net transit costs and undermines profits.

Jon Johansen - v - Hollywood

Many (most?) prosecutions started by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) on behalf of what's euphemistically called 'Hollywood' are farces, murky and badly scripted. And none is more so than the trial featuring Jon Johansen, the 19-year-old programmer from Norway who came up with DeCSS, an app Hollywood contends lets people pirate DVD content.

Ipsos-Reid: More Americans Downloading Music

Ipsos-Reids ongoing research on file trading again confirms a continuing rise in the number of Americans downloading music from the Net. Furthermore, almost a third (31%) of those who do download claim they have paid for at least some of the music they got online. Of course, having paid once from services like Rhapsody and PressPlay doesn't mean you were satisfied with the value.
