The new public beta release of Safari 4 reveals the deepest look yet at the future of Apple's software, hinting at what's in store for the closely guarded user interface revamp coming in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, as well as appropriating ideas from other browsers and adding some original flourishes, some of which go boldly and decisively past the company's existing human interface design guidelines.

Apple says Jobs still to return end of June

Steve Jobs, Apple co-founder and chief executive, is still expected to return to his post at the end of June, the company shareholders were told today.

Apple's board of directors said at its annual gathering that there was no change to the plans for Mr Jobs, who has taken a six-month medical leave of absence, to return to the company's helm.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard screenshots leaked

A new set of leaked screenshots of Apple's upcoming Mac OS X release, Snow Leopard, appears to confirm that the most sweeping changes to the operating system won't be visible.

World of Apple has screenshots up on its site, along with a video, of Mac OS X Snow Leopard Build 10A261, the latest version released for testing. When Apple announced plans for Snow Leopard in June, it said that Mac OS X 10.6 would focus more on improving the performance and stability of the operating system, rather than adding features.

Mac Plus Emulator now Available for Jailbroken iPhones

NOSTALGIA ALERT! There is now an honest-to-goodness Retro MacOS emulator for jailbroken iPhones in the form of Mini vMac, which loads disk images and everything. It's like getting your first Mac all over again. The OS, developed by Named Fork, is based around that found on the Mac Plus (v3.0, presumably).

Apple has published instructions for upgrading hard drives and RAM in its MacBook and MacBook Pro lines, and user-friendliness took another step backwards.

Before the "unibody" MacBook and MacBook Pros were introduced last October, memory replacement in both was a breeze. The MacBook in particular was an upgrader's delight, with both its RAM and its hard drive easily accessible by even the least handy of users. No more.

'Secrets' of iPhone App Usage

The results are in. Analytics software firm Pinch Media has released perhaps the most detailed stats on iPhone application usage to date based on over 30 million downloads its tracked.

For iPhone developers, the results are clear: Paid apps have an immediate payback, while the ad-supported model takes longer and generally relies on repeat users.

Apple Discontinues Legacy 20-inch Cinema Display

Apple has pulled the plug on its legacy 20" Cinema Display, leaving consumers with just two options now - the recently unveiled LED-lit 24" model for notebooks and the legacy 30" display for desktops. According to a worldwide bulletin that was sent to its sales and service channels, "With immediate effect, the following products are 'End of Life' (EOL); Apple 20" Cinema Display.

A photo making the rounds on the Internet appears to conform to descriptions of a next-generation Mac mini published by AppleInsider earlier in the year.

The photo shows the rear of a Mac mini that includes five USB ports instead of 4, both mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort connectors, and FireWire 800 instead of 400 -- all of which were specifications for a next-generation Mac mini first published by AppleInsider back in January (1, 2).

Mozilla backs move to decriminalize iPhone jailbreaking

Mozilla Corp. is backing a move that would nullify copyright infringement charges against people who "jailbreak" their iPhones, a practice that Apple Inc. considers against the law.

In comments submitted to the U.S. Copyright Office, the maker of Firefox said it supports the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in its request for an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The EFF wants the Copyright Office to let users jailbreak their phones without fear of copyright infringement penalties.
