Apple announced today that it sold one million iPhone 3G S phones through Sunday, three days after the device launched, matching last year's sales mark of the iPhone 3G.

"Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement. "iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.

The iPhone 3G S sales mark claimed by Apple is significantly higher than analysts' estimates before the weekend. Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, for example, had pegged sales at 500,000, then upped his estimate early Monday -- before Apple announced its number -- to 750,000.

Those eager to see Snow Leopard in action can now see it through an unofficial but detailed series of videos detailing the upcoming Mac OS X release.

The tour, built out of a series of YouTube videos from MyAppleGuide, shows some of the key changes made to the operating system in the WWDC build released to developers earlier this month.

So far, the six clips on hand tackle core interface features like the updated Finder, Preview, Stacks, System Preferences and the overhauled interface of QuickTime Player X.

Apple is known for building excitement over its latest gadgets, but the company's next closely watched event has nothing to do with a product. Instead, anticipation is growing over the scheduled return of Apple's charismatic CEO.

It's been almost six months since Steve Jobs -- who co-founded Apple and has thrilled the public by launching consumer tech favorites such as the iPhone and the iPod -- announced that he was taking a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

Apple's CEO and cofounder hopes to put his health problems behind him

Founding one of tech industry's biggest players -- Apple -- and personally turning the company around in the late nineties was nothing compared to the challenge that Apple CEO Steve Jobs faced in 2004. Battling a rare and deadly form of pancreatic cancer, Mr. Jobs recovered thanks to surgery and reassumed his leadership role at the company, integrally helping to conceive, develop and release hit products such as the iPhone and MacBook Air.

As promised, the iPhone Dev Team have released the latest version of PwnageTool which will allow for jailbreaking (not baseband unlocking - for that you will need to wait for ultrasn0w) on the iPhone 2G, 3G and iPod Touch 1G. From the Dev Team blog:

Now that Apple's servers seemed to have recuperated from an onslaught of downloads, users are finding that the newly released iPhone OS 3.0 update brings with it a number of little tweaks and adjustments that up until now haven't been widely reported, if at all.

The mad grab for the newest version of Apple's iPhone won't begin in earnest until the iPhone 3G S is released on Friday. But a flood of current iPhone users looking to download the newest operating system, iPhone OS 3.0, crashed the activation server at the iTunes store on Wednesday.

Apple simultaneously released patches for 46 security vulnerabilities in the OS 3.0 which, if left unpatched, could allow hackers to execute malicious code through maliciously crafted images or PDF files.

Think twice before tethering that iPhone

AT&T won't let you tether your iPhone to a PC for on-the-go broadband until later this summer, yet a series of do-it-yourself tutorials have already sprung up on the Web. But before you go downloading HD movies over your makeshift tethered iPhone connection, take heed.

Of course, the ability to share your iPhone's data connection with your PC over USB or Bluetooth is one of the most-anticipated features of iPhone Software 3.0, but AT&T has (infamously) announced that it won't have an official tethering plan until later this summer.

While security professionals (like me) fret about iPhone threats, this prosumer smartphone continues to spread throughout the enterprise. At last month's Interop Las Vegas, a packed crowd gathered to hear panelists discuss enterprise iPhone adoption trends. When moderator Nathan Clevenger (Enterprise Editor, Smartphone Magazine) polled the audience, roughly one third officially supported the iPhone, while another third banned it. The rest used iPhones anyway, without their employer's help.

When Apple starts selling what it bills as the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet on Friday, the company's latest entry will only heat up the already sizzling smartphone landscape.

Fans, techies and ordinary consumers eager to purchase the new iPhone 3GS may be preparing to stand in line at Apple stores around the United States and seven other countries. But they have more choices than ever when it comes to phones that act like mini-computers.
