As Steve Jobs goes out of his way to badmouth Adobe Flash and keep it off both the iPhone and the iPad, Apple is developing its own Flash alternative.

Citing tweets from a developer who viewed a demo of the technology, AppleInsider reports that Steve Jobs and company are developing a standards-based framework for building rich internet applications (RIAs). They call it Gianduia, after, um, an Italian hazelnut chocolate.

Potentially lending support to the rumored "iPhone HD" name, new evidence in the iPhone OS 4 SDK suggests the camera in Apple's next-generation handset could record 720p high-definition video.

Preset values for video capture in the latest beta of the software development kit show a supported resolution of 1280x720 pixels, according to MacRumors. That's the same progressive-scan resolution used for high-definition 720p content. iPhone OS 4 beta 3 was released this week with a new iPod widget feature.

If you want to buy a consumer-friendly tablet computer today and you don't want to purchase Apple's iPad, you're pretty much out of luck.

The iPad currently has no real competitors, and the touch-screen computer is so far ahead of the market that it has some gadget makers running back to the drawing boards, according to technology industry analysts. "In essence, what Apple has done is created a wake-up call to the rest of the industry -- that they need to look at what they're offering," said David Daoud, research director for the firm IDC. "They raised the bar significantly."

A group called the iPhone Dev Team (who are not officially associated with Apple) have claimed they have already been able to port across the iPhone’s SMS application and run it using command lines on the recently release iPad 3G + WiFi.

Though neither model of the iPad is available in Australia yet (pre-ordering begins next Monday), the team have reportedly managed to unofficially add support to the iPad 3G for messaging once a third-party SIM is placed into the device with an SMS plan.

The person who found and sold an Apple iPhone prototype says he regrets not doing more to return the device to its owner, according to a statement provided by his attorney Thursday in response to queries from Wired.com.

Brian J. Hogan, a 21-year-old resident of Redwood City, California, says although he was paid by tech site Gizmodo, he believed the payment was for allowing the site exclusive access to review the phone. Gizmodo emphasized to him “that there was nothing wrong in sharing the phone with the tech press,” according to his attorney Jeffrey Bornstein.
