On Friday Apple announced that it is "bringing the revolutionary App Store experience to Mac OS X". The Mac App Store will be available 7 January next year, opening in 90 countries at launch and offering both free and paid apps for Mac users in a virtual shopfront likely to be familiar to anyone who's spent any time browsing the App Store for the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

The on-line marketplace for the Cupertino company's OSX operating system will operate on the same model as the successful iTunes App Store for iOS4 devices, allowing simple purchase, download and updating of oodles of Apps from third-party developers and Apple itself.

It's a massive roll-out for Apple with 90 countries in on the action at launch, though there has been no indication thus far of how many Apps will be available on day one, or if any of them will be any good.

Apple disabled jailbreak detection API in iOS 4.2

Less than six months after introducing it, Apple has quietly disabled its jailbreak detection API through the iOS 4.2 software update, according to a new report.

Network World reports that the API, which was released in June as part of a mobile device management (MDM) bundle for iOS 4.0, has been disabled in iOS 4.2, leaving perplexed vendors to question why. The API had previously allowed third-party MDM applications, such as AirWatch or Sybase's Afaria, to check for unauthorized modifications to the system files, author John Cox wrote.

Apple Patches 15 Security Flaws In QuickTime Media Player

Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) issued an update to its QuickTime media player Wednesday, releasing a total of 15 patches to repair a slew of media file security bugs, the majority of which could be exploited remotely to launch malicious attacks. The latest version, QuickTime 7.6.9, is available for Mac OS X, and an array of Windows platforms, including Windows 7, Vista and XP.

Don't buy an iPad this Christmas

Apple is planning to make its first generation of iPads out-of-date in February which will mean all those Christmas presents from wealthy parents will be a waste of cash.

According to DigiTimes, the much awaited iPad II, which contains all the features that the iPad I should have had, but didn't will be in production in late February for an early April 2011 launch. While it will appear that Apple is sticking two fingers up at its Christmas market, the situation would have been much worse if its original plan had gone ahead.

Apple on Monday said that it plans to release the promised update to iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. The update brings a number of long-awaited iOS 4 features to the iPad and adds the new AirPlay and AirPrint features for all iOS devices.
