Has Apple infiltrated the jailbreak community?

If you can’t beat them, join them. At least that seems to be Apple’s new mantra when it comes to patching jailbreak bugs according to Comex.

One of the more influential hackers in the jailbreak community, Comex believes Apple may have planted a hacker on the iPhone Dev Team. The move, if it turns out to be true, would explain Apple’s ability to patch jailbreak exploits before the iPhone Dev Team could release their software to the public.

Apple shouldn't rush iPhone 5, and neither should you

Today, the air is flush with rumors -- now from three credible journalists -- that iPhone 5 won't debut during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2011, in June. Rumors like these are great for generating pageviews and for sending some Wall Street analysts or Apple shareholders into cardiac arrest. But other than a few 911 calls for emergency services, does it really matter?

The cat and mouse game between Apple and jailbreakers is getting intense. Apple got real serious when they added ASLR to iOS 4.3 and forced iDevice hackers back to their drawing boards. But members of the jailbreak community responded, a tethered jailbreak was quickly made available with a patched mobile substrate file.

Apple Ditches SAMBA in Favour of Homegrown Replacement

When you run smbd -V on your Snow Leopard installation, you'll see it's running SAMBA version 3.0.28a-apple. While I'm not sure how much difference the "-apple" makes, version 3.0.28a is old. Very old. In other words, it's riddled with bugs. Apple hasn't updated SAMBA in 3 years, and for Lion, they're dumping it altogether for something homegrown. The reason? SAMBA is now GPLv3.

Apple Blocks Access to Cydia in its Stores

The battle against the jailbreakers has always seemed to be an uphill one for Apple; it takes hackers just days to break into the latest iOS releases, and last year federal regulators said that it was no longer illegal to hack or jailbreak an iPhone. However, there is one thing Apple can but a definite stop to, and that’s accessing Cydia using its Wi-Fi networks in Apple retail stores.

Ten years old today, how Mac OS X changed Apple's world

Ten years ago today and Apple's [AAPL] first full public version of Mac OS X went on sale worldwide to a gleeful reception as thousands of Mac users attended special events at their local computer shops all across the planet. I was at one such event in Central London. What we didn't know then was that Apple was preparing to open up its own chain of retail outlets, nor had we heard Steve Jobs use the phrase, "iPod". Windows was still a competitor, and Google was still a search engine. These were halcyon days, when being a Mac user meant belonging to the second team.

iOS 4.3.1 is expected to roll out in the coming weeks but that hasn't stopped the update from leaking prematurely to a handful of developers and media outlets. BGR for one has just reported that one of their Apple connects have installed iOS 4.3.1 to their iPhone and are spilling the beans on what we can expect.

As previously assumed, the iOS 4.3.1 update is a minor one designed mainly to squash some bugs. However BGR reports that their initial hands on hints improved battery life, although they advise its not been taken to the lab yet and confirmed.

Inside Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Server: Apple replaces Samba for Windows networking services

The upcoming release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Server will remove the formerly bundled open source Samba software and replace it with Apple's own tools for Windows file sharing and network directory services.

Apple began bundling Samba with Mac OS X 10.2, enabling Mac users to connect to Microsoft's Windows file and network directory services based on SMB (Server Message Block, a protocol also known as Windows File Sharing).

Order will see sick Steve Jobs hauled into court

Apple's poorly front man Steve Jobs has been ordered to appear in a Californian court to answer questions about iTunes.

Apple's media-mangling software, which comes pre-installed on all Macs and is pretty much essential if you want to use and of the company's mobile devices including the iPhone, iPad and various flavours of iPod, has come under fire in a class action suit which says it's unfair for Apple to insist that no-one else is allowed to install music on its gadgets.

Apple sticking to March 25th for European iPad 2 launch

Despite rumours to the contrary, many of them started on these pages, Apple says it will not be pushing back the European launch of the iPad 2.

The Second Coming of the genre-defining gadget was such a success - with initial shipments believed to be anywhere between 600,000 and one million units selling out in the first day on sale - that many pundits have predicted that Apple would be forced to delay the International launch while the USA had its fill.
