Researchers spot first mobile spyware

Researchers with McAfee claim to have found a first spyware application that targets the Symbian operating system for mobile phones.

The spyware application comes bundled with a variant of the MultiDropper mobile phone Trojan. McAfee refers to the new online pest as SymbOS/MultiDropper.CG. It tracks SMS text messages that are sent and copies log file with the phone number of incoming and outbound phone calls.

Myspace Hit by QuickTime Worm

Social networking site, MySpace has been bugged by a malicious QuickTime video file, which embeds itself on people's MySpace pages and changes their profiles, when downloaded and played. Internet security firm, WebSense, says that the worm adds links to fraudulent sites, on the pages of MySpace members by exploiting a cross-scripting vulnerability in the site and support for JavaScript in Apple's embedded media player.

New Trojan tricks users with offer of free pornography, warns Sophos

Experts at SophosLabs? have warned of a new spam campaign that claims to offer free explicit images and videos, in an attempt to trick users into downloading a malicious Trojan horse. According to Sophos, a weblink to the Psyme-DL Trojan is being widely circulated within emails using a variety of subject lines, invariably containing the words 'free' and 'porn'.

Antivirus firms battle 'unique malware'

As malware is increasingly written with a specific target in mind, antivirus firms are deploying more intelligent detection tools and creating unique signatures for individual clients.

Over the past few years, malware attacks have evolved from a sawn-off shotgun approach, where a virus is released into the wild with the objective of infecting as many computers as possible, to a sniper approach, where Trojans are specifically crafted to spy on a particular company or even an individual.

Chinese malware targets passwords and log-ins

Half of all malware originating in China during October was designed to steal usernames and passwords, an IT security firm warned today.

By analysing the malware, which was written in a simplified version of Chinese, Sophos reported that 45.2 percent aimed to steal online game log-in information.

Grisoft's launch of two new versions of its AVG security tools for open source operating systems Linux and FreeBSD suggests that there's nowhere safe to hide from computer viruses anymore. Grisoft, which markets its AVG products through the relatively unusual tactic of offering free versions for consumers, rather than raking in annual subscription fees from absolutely everybody, has announced that version 7.5 of AVG for use on servers has been released for both Linux and FreeBSD enthusiasts.

Anonymous hackers on Friday planted a backdoor virus program on the Website of China Unionpay (www.chinaunionpay.com), the country's only national electronic payment network operator, that may result in customer information being leaked, Xinhua has learnt.

The backdoor program, Backdoor.BlackHole.2005.a, is capable of hijacking customer's computers when they visit the Website, said engineers at Rising Corporation, a leading Chinese computer security company.

German security firm warns of eavesdropping cell-phone virus

The chief executive officer of a data security firm claims to have developed a virus for mobile phones that will allow hackers to eavesdrop on phone calls and text messages.

Wilfried Hafner, CEO of German firm SecurStar Gmbh, developed the Trojan horse ?solely for demonstration purposes,? according to a company statement?although SecurStar does offer a free download that is supposed to protect phones from this and other Trojans. The virus, dubbed RexSpy, is spread by ?sending an invisible and unnoticeable SMS message? to infect a particular cell phone.

Online attackers have started to experiment with embedding malicious code or links to such code in different video formats.

On Tuesday, anti-virus firm McAfee warned Windows users that the company had discovered a worm, dubbed W32/Realor, actively infecting Real Media files. The infected video files do not contain an exploit for the RealOne or Real players, but a hyperlink that points to a malicious website. When infected files are opened, the victim is referred to the web ite, which attempts to compromise their computer using a previously patched flaw in Internet Explorer.
