Stallman changes position on GNU/Linux Issue

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS - Richard Stallman, known as RMS to his friends and the community, announces an important change in the GNU project today, from his former home in the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab.

"For some time now, people have called me hypocritical in requesting the GNU/Linux name for the Linux kernel which has been attached to the operating system based upon the GNU toolchain. But I firmly believe the lack of GNU acknowledgement to be completely unfair," said an upbeat Richard Stallman at today's conference.

After what seems like an interminable wait, the newly formed Xandros Corporation announced that it has signed a strategic licensing agreement with Corel Corporation, giving it access to Corel's Linux desktop OS and related technologies. (The desktop applications, such as WordPerfect Office for Linux, remain with Corel.) Xandros was staked with US $10 million in venture capital by its founding parent, Linux Global Partners.

Linux community celebrates 10th anniversary

As the Linux community gathers this week in San Francisco to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Linux, a host of vendors led by IBM will roll out a range of products intended to boost the fortunes of the open operating system in corporate accounts.

At the conference IBM will unwrap what company officials believe is the first e-commerce suite for Linux on mainframes. Version 5.1 of the Websphere Commerce Suite is intended to increase the global reach of corporate customers by making it easier to conduct e-business around the world as well as offering better customer support.

Corel Finally Bails on Linux

TORONTO -- Canadian software developer Corel is expected to sell the majority of its Linux division on Wednesday to a privately held startup, a move that would end its commitment to developing the Linux desktop operating system software.

A source close to the negotiations told Reuters Tuesday that a newly formed company called Xandros will pay $2 million for the Linux unit, a division that comprised about 14 percent of Corel's total business as of January 2001.

The results of several previous research projects in this area have been incorporated in a security-enhanced Linux system. This version of Linux has a strong, flexible mandatory access control architecture incorporated into the major subsystems of the kernel. The system provides a mechanism to enforce the separation of information based on confidentiality and integrity requirements. This allows threats of tampering and bypassing of application security mechanisms to be addressed and enables the confinement of damage that can be caused by malicious or flawed applications.

HP to launch secure Linux today

Hewlett-Packard has launched a secure version of Linux later in a departure from the normal approach of partnering with Linux distributors, such as Red Hat.

HP Secure OS Software for Linux, which is based on the 2.4 kernel and costs about $3,000, News.com reports. According to HP, its OS prevents unauthorised communication between programs, networks and files. If the Linux-based system is penetrated, the Secure OS Software containment feature locks the program, which prevents damage to internal systems.

Desktop Linux fades as Dell pulls the plug

Dell Computer Corp. has quietly stopped offering the Linux operating system as an option on its desktop and laptop PCs, saying low demand forced the Linux-advocate to pull the software from its online stores. Dell has championed the open-source operating system through investments in companies such as Red Hat Inc. and Linux desktop software maker Eazel Inc., which has since gone out of business.
