Secure boot: Linux Foundation, vendors offer solutions

Microsoft's proposal for a secure boot process in Windows 8 has alarmed GNU/Linux vendors and the body that caters to kernel development to the extent that they have drafted documents to specify how such a process can be used without hindering the use of other operating systems.

Both papers, one from the Linux Foundation, and the second a joint effort from Red Hat, Canonical and Parallels, were released on October 28.

Why do Linux fanatics want to make Windows 8 less secure?

The FUD is flying fast and furious over Windows 8, and the OS isn’t even in beta yet.

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is organizing a petition-signing campaign over Microsoft’s announced support for the secure boot feature in next-generation PCs that use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) as a replacement for the conventional PC BIOS. My ZDNet colleague Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols is urging his readers to sign the petition with a bit of deliberately inflammatory language, calling it “UEFI caging.”

Check your machines for malware, Linux developers told

Following a series of embarrassing intrusions that hit the servers used to maintain and distribute the Linux operating system, project elders have advised all developers to check their Linux machines for signs of compromise.

Emails sent Friday by Linux kernel lead developers Greg Kroah-Hartman and H Peter Anvin arrived as volunteers with the open-source project worked to bring LinuxFoundation.org, Linux.com, and Kernel.org back online following attacks that gained root access to the multiple servers that host the sites.

Linux Guru Hans Reiser Demands New Murder Trial

Linux programmer Hans Reiser, who in 2008 was found guilty of murdering his estranged wife in Oakland, California, is going to federal court to demand a new trial, claiming his attorney forced him to take the stand against his will.

The murder case, in which Reiser ultimately received a 15-to-life sentence, began with no body, no crime scene, no reliable eyewitness and virtually no physical evidence. It ended with Reiser convicted of killing Nina, his 31-year-old wife, after he took the stand and proceeded to slowly hang himself over the course of 11 days of testimony.

Yes, UEFI 'secure boot' could lock out Linux from Windows 8 PCs

To be certified as a fully-compliant, bona fide Windows 8 logo device, a prospective PC must replace its aging BIOS with the new-fangled Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). On the outset, this is certainly a good thing — UEFI is the reason that Windows 8 can detect rootkits and malware at boot time, and it’s part of the reason that Windows 8 can start so quickly — but UEFI could also be used to block other operating systems, such as Linux, from being installed.

Linux sites still down after security breach

The Linux community has been hit by more security woes after a breach forced the temporary closure of the web sites of the Linux Foundation and others.

At the time of writing, LinuxFoundation.org, Linux.com and all sub domains were offline and replaced with a message informing visitors that a security breach occurred on 8 September, most likely as a result of an intrusion on Kernel.org at the end of August.
