Intel Corp., the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, will announce next week its speediest Pentium 4 processor yet, according to industry sources, as the company looks to reap the benefits from increased production efficiencies.

The files above contain the Intel® Application Accelerator. This utility updates Windows* XP, Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows NT* 4.0 to reduce the storage sub-system bottleneck - enabling faster delivery of data from the hard drive to the processor and other system level hardware. The Intel Application Accelerator replaces the Intel(R) Ultra ATA Storage Driver.

Sun revives Solaris for Intel

Sun is to revive the Intel version of Solaris, which it effectively mothballed late last year.

From September, Sun will offer Solaris x86 8.0, alongside Linux on its new 'Big Bear' Intel hardware that it will announce this morning in San Francisco. And from early next year, Solaris 9.0 for Intel will be an option, too.

Itanic OEM slams Itanic

NEC's chief architect Len Tsai launched an astonishing attack on Intel's Itanium processor at Bert McComas' Platforms Conference in San Jose today.

Tsai stunned the room by describing Intel's approach as "brute force", and predicted that learning the new instruction set would take "half a generation". He said NEC - which shipped its Itanic2 servers last week, had not seen any demand for the ten-year old processor.

Intel invests in Linux clustering

Intel Corp has joined a group of Norwegian investment and technology companies in providing second-round funding to Linux-based clustering software company Scali AS.

Oslo, Norway-based Scali is the developer of clustering software for the open source Linux operating system. The company has its roots in a defense research project from the mid-1990s, and in 1997 was spun off from Kronsberg Gruppen, a Norwegian technology vendor that focused on the maritime, defense and aerospace markets.

Intel to release Itanium 2 at two speeds

Intel's upcoming Itanium 2 processor will come out at 900MHz and 1GHz, according to sources, and cost about the same as existing Itanium chips.
In all, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker will release three versions of the 64-bit chip for high-end servers next week: a 1GHz version containing 3MB of level three cache memory, a 1GHz version containing 1.5MB of cache, and a 900MHz version containing 1.5MB of cache.
