Businesses are completely ignoring a growing problem facing their organisations as cyber criminals look to target increased security flaws as operations move to the cloud.

Cloud computing was one of the buzzwords of 2012, gaining widespread adoption among individuals, SMEs and major corporations all around the world. It is going to make our lives easier while saving us millions of pounds at the same time.

Cloud research exposes gaps between CIOs and business leaders

We often hear that IT is not aligned with the business, which is a catchall concept loosely meaning that business leaders and IT folks do not understand each other's goals. Although differences in perspective and goals between these groups do exist, the gaps are difficult to measure, quantify, or even describe precisely. Nonetheless, these differences in goals and expectations are real.

Kim Dotcom may see himself as being at war with Hollywood, but the man has quite a sense of theatrics himself. The show he put on for the world tonight at his mansion outside Auckland was audacious and loud, featuring a Maori-themed musical performance by Tiki Taane, a raid re-enactment complete with helicopters marked "FBI," and dancing girls clad in military-style dress (but with miniskirts). That's how Dotcom announced his new service, Mega, to the world.

In 2012, we saw increased worries about nation-state-sponsored cybercrime, mobile security, and the resurrection of an old tactic: the venerable denial-of-service attack. On the heels of my “Five Myths About The Cloud That Will Be Debunked in 2013” post, here are five security predictions for the coming year.

Just over half of IT professionals who focus on cloud computing do not trust cloud services for any of their personal data, a survey has revealed.

Some 86% of those polled by Lieberman Software said they do not trust the cloud for their organisation’s more sensitive data, and 88% said that they believe that there is a chance that the data their organisation keeps in the cloud could be lost, corrupted or accessed by unauthorised individuals.

Cybersecurity tops CIO’s concerns, with 84% of CIOs stating that they are either concerned or very concerned about the risks associated with IT security breaches. Yet while security issues remain the biggest concern that CIOs have about migrating their technology functions to the cloud, less than half (45%) test cloud vendors’ security systems and procedures.

It's the time when predictions for the new year run high, and when it comes to IT security, Gartner analysts are predicting that 2013 is going to be about expansion of cloud computing and the struggle by the enterprise to achieve appropriate security for it.

"Increased adoption of cloud-based computing is expected to impact the way security is consumed as well as how key government agencies will prioritize security of public cloud infrastructure," was the take from Gartner analysts Ruggero Contu, Lawrence Pingree, and Eric Ahlm in their predictions forecast.

Pneumonia, which claims the lives of more than 1.2 million children under the age of 5 every year, is the leading cause of death in children worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. And in certain regions, such as South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, pneumonia alone accounts for 85 percent of pediatric deaths.

Computer scientists at the University of North Carolina have constructed (pdf) a system whereby a malicious virtual machine is used in a so-called access-driven side-channel attack for the first time.

Running on the Xen hypervisor, the attack succeeded in extracting an ElGamal decryption key from a victim virtual machine using the most recent version of the libgcrypt cryptographic library, the researchers wrote.

AT&T's apparently jumping into the cloud storage fray with a new program called AT&T Locker.

AT&T's cloud-based Locker is hardly new, having been made available to Android users since this past September. But, as of today, iOS users on the network now have the option to enjoy that freemium service as well, with 5GB offered gratis. The service will provide up to 5 GB of free storage via an app to iOS users, with extra charges for any storage above that.
