Microsoft loads botnet-crushing data into Azure

Microsoft is plugging its security intelligence systems into Azure so that service providers and local authorities can get near-realtime information on botnets and malware detected by Redmond.

The new Windows Azure-based Cyber Threat Intelligence Program (C-TIP) was unveiled on Tuesday by Microsoft as an extension of its crime-busting Microsoft Active Response for Security (MARS) program.

McAfee intros single sign-on, one-time password controls for cloud

McAfee is sprucing up its cloud security portfolio with a couple of products from its parent company, Intel.

For starters, Intel is adding single sign-on and one-time password solutions that were previously sold and developed by Intel to its portfolio.

Reintroduced as the SaaS-based McAfee Single Sign On solution, the feature includes unlimited SSO connectors, built-in multi-factor authetnication, hybrid deployments (i.e. on-premise, SaaS or both), and 24-hour customer support. Pricing ranges from $1 to $5 per user based on the number of users/seats.

ColdFusion hack used to steal cloud hosting provider's customer data

A vulnerability in the ColdFusion Web server platform, reported by Adobe less than a week ago, has apparently been in the wild for almost a month and has allowed the hacking of at least one company website, exposing customer data. Yesterday, it was revealed that the virtual server hosting company Linode had been the victim of a multi-day breach that allowed hackers to gain access to customer records.

Amazon turns Cloud Drive into a Dropbox rival with file syncing

Amazon's Cloud Drive was unveiled two years ago for the primary purpose of letting customers store music files purchased from Amazon. Although you could upload other files to Cloud Drive, it wasn't a replacement for cloud storage services like Dropbox because it didn't automatically sync files from one computer to another.

SpiderOak: Encrypting the cloud and foiling corporate hackers

I recently met with Ethan Oberman (above) CEO and co-founder of SpiderOak, a cloud based data storage service used for backups or syncing data. It promises a very high level of security because everything is encrypted -- SpiderOak has no idea what you are storing.

This is the same strategy that Kim Dotcom, the infamous founder of Megaupload has recently taken with his latest storage venture Mega. Megaupload was shut down by US authorities because it is alleged that it stored huge quantities of pirated movies and other copyrighted materials.

Former Microsoft employee launches third party SkyDrive Windows 8 app

 Microsoft has provided a SkyDrive "Modern" UI app for Windows 8 and Windows RT for some time, however the app still lacks some features compared to the Windows desktop app. For example, the "Modern" app cannot currently sync your SkyDrive account down to a local folder on your Windows 8 or RT PC. Windows 8 owners can do this with the desktop app, but if you own a Windows RT device, such as the Surface RT tablet, you are out of luck.
