Analysts finger dirty dozen Chinese hacking groups

US cyber security analysts and experts have reported that 12 groups are behind the bulk of China-based cyber attacks stealing critical data from US companies and government agencies.

According to the Associated Press, the US often gives the attackers unique names or numbers and can tell where the hackers are, and even who they are.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce was breached a year ago by Chinese hackers targeting four employees working on Asia-related policy.

The hackers may have had access to the lobbying organization's network for more than a year before they were blocked and removed in May 2010, two unidentified sources told The Wall Street Journal Dec. 21. A Chamber of Commerce spokesperson confirmed the incident and told eWEEK that the scope of the attack was limited.

DDoS criminals are trying to batter down DDoS defences with larger attacks and new techniques, mitigation outfit Prolexic has said, only weeks after the company detected a huge assault on a Chinese company.

The attack on the unnamed organisation and its DNS provider happened between 5 and 12 November and reached 45Gbit/s at peak, equivalent to 69 million packets or 15,000 connections per second, way above the level that can be easily stemmed using standalone appliances, the company claimed.

Speaking at a news briefing today, China Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said claims that China was behind the hacks, which occurred in 2007 and 2008, are "untrue". The spokesperson added, according to Reuters, which attended the briefing, that China is "also a victim of hacking attacks and will oppose any form of cybercrime, including hacking".

China's long history of Internet censorship is what's best for the public, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters yesterday.

According to Reuters, which spoke with Yu in an interview published today, China believes that its "Internet management" is not only "lawful," but is designed to "safeguard the public."

Chinese PLA video shows cyber-attack software

It’s being called an accident, but it could also be a show of force: a piece of state propaganda from China shows an attack being launched against Falun Gong computers. New York-based newspaper The Epoch Times says this image, taken from a TV spot aired in July, shows the software in use.

The newspaper translates the labels in the image as “Select attack target”, a drop-down list of Falun Gong Websites, and an “attack” button. It says the video, some of which is posted on F-Secure’s blog, provides direct evidence of government involvement in cyber-attacks.
