Samsung is China's top smartphone maker

Samsung has been crowned the most popular smartphone producer in China according to analysts at research firm Gartner. The Korean manufacturer beat others such as Nokia, Huawei, ZTE and Apple to clinch the title and now boasts an impressive 24.3% market share in China. 

Meanwhile, while Apple's iPhone 4S is apparently the most desired handset in China, it's limited availability with carriers has played its part in Samsung's achievement.

A man bought what he thought was an iPhone in an electronics plaza in Zhengzhou. But when he found out it was fake, he grabbed a kitchen knife and went back to the plaza to find the seller. After coming back every day for several days unsuccessfully finding the seller, he found another group of counterfeit iPhone sellers, got into an argument and ending up stabbing one of them to death.

Crack in China's firewall turns Obama page into freedom forum

Chinese Internet users taking advantage of temporary access to Google Inc's social networking site, Google+, have flooded U.S. President Barack Obama's page on the site with calls for greater freedom in the world's most populous country.

"Oppose censorship, oppose the Great Firewall of China!" one user posted, one of hundreds of comments in Chinese or by people with Chinese names that dominated the site over the weekend.

China Telecom to start selling Apple's iPhone 4S

China Telecom said on Tuesday it will begin selling the iPhone 4S on March 9, making it the second carrier in the country to officially sell Apple's popular smartphone.

The agreement opens up sales of Apple's newest iPhone to China Telecom's 129 million mobile subscribers. Rival China Unicom had previously been the sole carrier of the iPhone in China. Analysts said this helped drive China Unicom's mobile subscriber growth. It now has 202.8 million users.

China Telecom reveals upcoming launch of iPhone 4S

A CDMA version of the phone could launch on China's third largest wireless carrier as early as late February or early March, China Telecom subsidiary Beijing Telecom said in a press release cited by China Daily. "China Telecom has already started preparatory work for the launch of the iPhone 4S."

Pricing details were not revealed, and Apple representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Chinese 'attack US DoD Smart Cards' with Sykipot Malware

A new strain of the Sykipot malware is being used by Chinese cyber criminals to compromise US Department of Defense (DoD) smart cards, a new report has revealed.

The malware has been designed to take advantage of smart card readers running ActivClient - the client application of ActivIdentity - according to unified security information and event management (SIEM) company AlienVault.
