Apple this week asked a federal court judge to intervene in its discovery process with unauthorized Mac clone maker Psystar, which is reportedly violating proper procedure by refusing to answer key questions and turn over critical financial information about its business.

The perils for Apple in creating its own chip team

The consensus is building that Apple is designing its own chips in an effort to create exclusive features for the gadgets that it plans to sell in the future.

If the Cupertino, Calif.-based company can pull it off, that would be great. But in this day and age, it’s kind of a crazy strategy and one that is fraught with risks. Apple could clearly benefit by not having to pay for chips designed by others. But that privilege comes with hundreds of millions of dollars in engineering costs.

iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 Adds Voice Memo Recorder

Late Tuesday, Apple made a fourth beta version of the iPhone 3.0 operating system available to developers. One new feature spotted in the software is a voice-recording application.

Along with the new beta OS software, Apple also gave developers a sneak peek at iTunes version 8.2 beta. The only obvious thing I saw in iTunes 8.2 was the option to encrypt the iPhone back-ups stored on the computer. In other words, if your laptop is lost or stolen, hackers shouldn't be able to get at the information stored in your iPhone backups because it is encrypted. Nice.

Is the world finally ready for the mobile minitablet? It's become quite clear over the last several months that Apple is ready to bridge the mobile computing gap, with plans to develop a device that fits somewhere in between the iPhone and the MacBook.

A recent Wall Street Journal article proclaimed that during his medical leave, CEO Steve Jobs has been working on that mid-sized mobile device, bigger than an iPhone but smaller than a MacBook.

The fourth beta release of the iPhone 3.0 OS has been released. For those with access to the an Apple Developer Account will know where to get this :)

UPDATE: It appears that Beta 4 requires iTunes 8.2 however iTunes reports that 8.1.1 is currently the latest and greatest. My bet is that we're going to see 10.5.7 and iTunes 8.2 out this week or latest next week.

We're reminded of the boy who cried wolf, but there's a report that Mac OS X 10.5.7 will be released this week. Mac OS X 10.5.7 has been through several developer releases in quick succession, leading to repeated speculation that its release is imminent.

AppleInsider is now reporting that 10.5.7 is complete and "should be made available for download by the general public sometime this week." Mind you, AppleInsider said something similar two weeks ago.

Apple Is Sued After Pressuring Open-source ITunes Project

The operator of a technology discussion forum has sued Apple, claiming that the company used U.S. copyright law to curb legitimate discussion of its iTunes software.

The lawsuit, filed Monday, could test the limits of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). It centers around an open-source effort to help iPods and iPhones work with software other than Apple's iTunes. Last November Apple's lawyers demanded that the Bluwiki.com Web site remove a project called iPodhash, saying that it violated the DMCA's anti-circumvention provisions.

Computer hackers have breached the previously pristine territory of Macintosh computers, a U.S. technology security director said.

Mac security under renewed question

Heise Security has confirmed the effectiveness of a privilege escalation exploit for Mac OS X. The result of mounting a maliciously formed HFS disk image file is that the user gains root privileges.

The exploit is one of several revealed at last month's CanSecWest 2009 conference by Christer Oberg and Neil Kettle. It could be used by someone that has legitimate access to a system with normal user privileges in order to carry out unauthorised activities that require admin rights.

Renowned Mac hacker Charlie Miller, who has won the CanSecWest Pwn2Own hacking contest two years in a row, has now found what is described as a potential security vulnerability in Apple's iPhone.

According to a NetworkWorld report, the security analyst at Independent Security Evaluators discovered the possible flaw days ago, at the Black Hat Europe security conference. Miller's discovery changes the way the public now views non-jailbroken iPhones, the report outlines.
