In America, filing for a patent is simple, and a patent is often approved by clerks with no actual knowledge of the technology in question. That makes it all too easy to file for frivolous, overly broad patents… then sue other companies for massive pay outs when they unknowingly infringe.

Macs Reclaim Top Reliability Rating

Apple reclaimed the top spot in the computer-reliability ranking of Rescuecom, a Syracuse, N.Y.-based technical support franchise, as netbook maker Asus' rating plummeted, Rescuecom's CEO said Saturday.

Apple's Macs, which led all rivals in Rescuecom's rankings during 2007 and 2008, ceded first place to PCs sold by Asustek Computer (better known as Asus) in the first half of 2009, falling as low as third in the first quarter, behind both Asus and Lenovo.

If you thought you just heard a disturbance in the Force--as if millions of voices cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced--then take a deep breath and relax: it's just a pair of Java software updates for Mac OS X.

Apple released the two updates, Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 1 and Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 6, on Thursday. Both include a number of security fixes for the cross-platform technology, with the Leopard update being the heftier of the two, weighing in at 122MB.

Apple tablet rumored to be 'shockingly' inexpensive

Internet and television personality Alex Albrecht claimed to have insight on the price of Apple's rumored tablet during the latest episode of Diggnation, which also featured actor John Hodgman from Apple's "Get a Mac" commercials.

During the course of episode 231 of the Internet-based show, co-host and Web entrepreneur Kevin Rose asked Hodgman, who plays the bumbling "PC" in Apple's commercials, if he has any inside information on the tablet. "I don't know anything about it," Hodgman said. "You think they'd tell me?"

Netbook hack released for Mac OSX 10.6.2

In a move that cut off Netbook owners from installing OSX on their machines, Apple updated their OSX to 10.6.2 which removed support for Intel Atom processors. Intel Atom processors are primarily used in Netbooks and are not used in any of Apple's computer lineup. For some time, hackers have been installing OSX on their Netbooks by using kernel hacks and special programs.

iPhone developer Pandav has informed MacRumors that they have spotted usage records for an unreleased iPhone in their app's analytics. The app used was iBART [Free / Paid], a public transportation guide for the San Francisco train system.
