Apple exploring 'particle gun' based wireless authentication

A new patent application from Apple describes a new, secure method of digital rights management that would identify the authenticity of a device based on the unique physical emission properties of a "particle gun."

The application, entitled "System and Method for Authentication Based on Particle Gun Emissions," was filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week. It states that current DRM methods for authentication, but by their nature they can lack security.

At Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference next week in San Francisco, developers may hear whether Apple will continue to support the semi-long-in-the-tooth version of Mac OS X, Version 10.4, aka Tiger. With developers currently dropping support in updates, Apple discontinuing patches, its days appear very numbered.

Based on Net Applications’ NetMarketShare OS version statistics, Tiger has about a 0.73 share of the total browser market share. But what does that mean to the Mac market?

Apple Sells Two Million iPads in Less than Two Months.

Apple on Monday announced that iPad sales have topped two million in less than 60 days since its launch on April 3. Apple began shipping iPad in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK this past weekend. iPad will be available in nine more countries in July and additional countries later this year.

“Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do. We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive officer.

While Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, has said that Apple will actively work against any SIM unlocks of the iPhone that has not stopped over two million iPhone owners from unlocking their phones. Since this statement from Mr. Jobs there has been a cat and mouse game between unlocking solutions and Apple’s defense against them.

Well, today that company - Apple - just surpassed Microsoft in terms of market value.
At the close of trading in Wall Street last night, Apple had a market capitalisation of $222 billion, compared with Microsoft's $219 billion. The valuation makes Apple the world's most valuable technology firm.

Apple has had a rough month. The company's next generation iPhone was leaked way ahead of schedule, spoiling the party for the smartphone's official early June announcement. Apple is notoriously secretive and protective of its unreleased products, so the early scoop understandably ruffled Steve Jobs' feathers to say the least.

Two years after fixing a security bug in the Windows version of its Safari browser, Apple apparently has decided that Mac users can go without a fix.

Apple was initially unimpressed by Nitesh Dhanjani's work developing what's known as a "carpet bomb" attack, the security researcher said in an interview Monday. "I told Apple about it two years ago, and they responded back, saying it was more of an annoyance than anything else."

Alleged photos of a next-generation iPhone partially assembled with a white front panel have surfaced online, further suggesting that Apple will offer two colors of its redesigned handset.

The Taiwanese website Apple.pro posted pictures of both a black redesigned iPhone, as seen in numerous leaks, next to a new white model, with the color taking up the entire front panel and home button. The front panel is identical to a leaked part that was revealed online last week.

iPhone 4.0 OS May Support Tethering

The next beta of the iPhone 4.0 OS may finally enable Internet tethering. AT&T failed to activate the feature for almost a year since Apple introduced the capability.

On Tuesday night, Apple released to developers the fourth beta of the upcoming iPhone 4.0 OS. Developers with access to the program started reporting on the various new features they found, most notably, AT&T tethering.
