Erica Sadun at TUAW poked around in the Apple TV firmware released this week and found evidence that Lowtide could run on other iOS devices like the iPad. If enabled, it would run as a "silent service," which means the user interface would only be displayed when requested.

Early demand for the iPhone 4 in China has outpaced initial supply as China Unicom struggles to fulfill the over 200,000 preorders it received last week.

China Unicom announced Sunday that it was having trouble meeting demand, according to a MarketWatch report. This year's iPhone 4 launch in China is an impressive turnaround from last year's muted launch. The official launch of the iPhone in October 2009 saw just 5,000 buyers in the first week after launch.

The next-generation Apple TV slated for release in late September was widely rumored to be based around an ARM architecture and the same iOS that powers Apple's mobile devices. However, the interface that Steve Jobs demoed looked identical to the one on the previous Apple TV, leaving some question about the underlying software. Configuration files in the iOS 4.2 beta released this week confirm that the new Apple TV is indeed an iOS device.

A new exploit called the SHAtter Jailbreak will allow all iOS users including iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, iPad, iPad 3G, and iPod touch to jailbreak their mobile devices for life. This is BIG news for those that jailbreak their iDevices. With SHAtter, the jailbreak community will always have their jailbreak. Apple won’t be able to patch the SHAtter jailbreak exploit, and the cat and mouse game with Apple and jailbreakers will most likely end.

The popular Cydia app store that is installed by default by most iOS jailbreaks is growing. The US Government has declared jailbreaks and unlocks of smartphones legal. Oh, and Cydia just bought its rival jailbreak app store Rock.
