Rumor: iOS 5 won't run on Apple's iPhone 3GS

A new rumor claims that Apple's next-generation mobile operating system, iOS 5, won't run on the iPhone 3GS first released in 2009 and still sold as the entry-level iPhone.

The claims stem from a Twitter post from Mobile-Review.com editor Eldar Murtazin, which was first discovered by MacStories. If true, it would mean that those who take advantage of the current $49 U.S. price of the iPhone 3GS could be out of luck with iOS 5 launches.

We're not sure when the iPhone 5 will be in consumers' hands; the last bit of iPhone-related development news suggested a minor update this year with refreshed hardware specifications, but keeping the same overall design. If the release of the iPhone 5 happens sometime in the near future, but not this year, then they might go for a new design refresh. The older iPhones prior to the fourth generation had curved backs, with a rather boxy design for the iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 may just have curves all around, including the screen itself, according to the latest bit out of the rumour mill.

Following the deadly explosions at Apple assembly plant Foxconn on Friday, an analyst has predicted that iPad production could drop as much as 36 percent in the third quarter.

Analyst Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital wrote that iPad production could drop 1.8-2.8 million units, against an estimated third quarter (June-September) production run of 8 million units, or 22-36 percent. This would impact Apple revenue by $1.1-1.7 billion, Abramsky noted, according to CNN.

The micro-SIM card found in Apple's iPhone 4, both generations of the iPad, and an increasing number of mobile devices could be going on a diet once again.

Reuters reported today that Apple has put forth plans to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for a smaller version of micro-SIM that could bring extra space-saving advantages to mobile gadgets.

Lending more evidence to suggest the camera and LED flash will be spaced further apart on Apple's fifth-generation iPhone, a new claimed "iPhone 5" component shows a camera part without an accompanying flash.

The purported rear camera part was revealed on Saturday by Apple.pro (via Google Translate). The site obtained pictures that claim to show both the forward- and rear-facing cameras on Apple's fifth-generation iPhone.
