Developer Confirms OS X 10.8.1 Update Significantly Improves MacBook Battery Life

When Apple released OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) back in July, one of the few things users complained about was its impact on MacBook battery life. The software seemingly contains a frustrating bug that causes some of Apple’s notebooks to lose around 38% of their normal charge.

Apple has been working on a fix that will be distributed with the OS X 10.8.1 update. And according to one registered developer who’s currently testing the beta, it significantly improves battery life by adding up to four hours.

These days, every Apple fan is hoping to get as many details as possible on the upcoming iPhone 5. Experts have found that cybercriminals are taking advantage of this to spread their malicious elements.

The emails – titled “iPhone 5 Battery Images Leak!!!” – contain an attachment that appears to be a harmless Office document. The message’s poorly written content reads:

Apple users employing Apple's Remote Desktop software to administer other servers have been doing so without their data being encrypted if they asked the software to do so, and were running the latest version.

In a patch released by the Cupertino, California, company today, Apple stated that when connecting to third-party virtual network computing (VNC) servers, data is not being encrypted, even when the user selects "Encrypt all network data". Additionally, no warning is being provided to the user.

A flaw found in Apple's iPhone that can allow text messages to sidestep Apple's safeguard is "severe", according to an iPhone security researcher. In a blog posting, pod2g explains:

Burglar steals $60,000 of computers from Steve Jobs' home

Police have arrested a man accused of breaking into the former home of Apple icon Steve Jobs and stealing over $60,000 worth of "computer equipment and personal items."

On July 17, Job's former home on Waverley Street in Palo Alto was broken into and turned over, AP reports. Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Tom Flattery, a member of the high-technology crimes unit, declined to say what exactly had been stolen but confirmed the police had a suspect in custody.

Oracle releases Java SE 7 update 6, bringing first-class support to OS X

Oracle announced on Tuesday that it will start offering direct downloads and auto-updates to Java on OS X beginning with the release of Java Standard Edition 7 Update 6. Users can download the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) directly from Oracle's java.com website "soon," according to Oracle, and will receive auto-updates at the same time as Windows, Linux, and Solaris platforms.

Buzz about the next-generation iPhone's release date has begun to concentrate on late September thanks to leaks coming from multiple sources. It's looking more and more likely that the big unveil will happen on September 12, as previously rumored, and the device may hit the US streets on September 21, with a larger wave of international rollouts taking place in early October.
