Malware and Spam in the New Year

Caught the Klez lately? It seems this persistent virus has moved up the ranks to become the numero uno plague for 2002. In fact, it seems nary a day goes by when some ingrate doesn't try to inflict viral carnage on my computer through a nasty e-mail message -- the latest declaring that it was "From Mom."
And as if Klez were not enough, MessageLabs, which makes antivirus software, has issued a "high-level alert" for a new variant of the Yaha.M e-mail worm, which became prolific over the holiday weekend. This scourge generates various messages, forging the "From" header and e-mail addresses.
MessageLabs said in its warning that this nasty code may be designed to seek out and disable security-related software and may result in a denial-of-service attack.
F-secure, another antivirus software maker, has warned that the new worm, which it has dubbed Yaha.K, may appear as an attachment ending with .scr, .exe or .com and should be stripped from e-mails at the firewall level.
