Twenty years ago tomorrow, July 27, Microsoft launched Windows NT, as Mark Morowczynski of Microsoft's "Ask Premier Field Engineering blog" reminded me this week.

NT's not ancient history, in spite of its age. The NT "core" is what's inside Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows Phone 8, Windows Azure and the Xbox One.

L33tdawg: Reminds me of the DiCOM-WAVE project from last year's HackWEEKDAY - an open source DICOM image viewer with Microsoft Kinect as its control interface.

Earlier this week at Microsoft's DemoFest in Redmond, Wash., the company's research arm showed off an incredible union of technologies that could finally usher in an inexpensive solution for people who want to communicate with a computer through sign language.

Microsoft today said it would give third-party app developers 180 days to clean up their security act -- and patch serious vulnerabilities -- or the company will yank their software from its online stores.

One impressed security expert called the move unprecedented. "I'm really happy with the public details on how they'll handle this," said Tyler Reguly, the manager of security research at Tripwire. "I'm not aware of similar public policies for Google Play or the Apple App Store."

Microsoft Corp said hackers have attacked some computers by exploiting a bug in Windows first disclosed two months ago by a Google Inc researcher, who came under fire at the time for publicizing the flaw without going to the software company first.

Microsoft provided few details about the attacks. In an advisory on Tuesday, it said hackers had launched "targeted attacks," a term generally used by security experts to refer to cyber attacks on corporate or government targets, with espionage and sabotage as the motive.

Microsoft today said it had received "a few submissions" so far for its Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) bug bounty program, the first for the company.

"We've received a few submissions to date for the IE11 Preview Bug Bounty and the Mitigation Bypass Bounty ... [and] the investigations are underway," said Katie Moussouris, a senior security strategist lead, on a company blog.

What's behind Microsoft's pending reorg?

It's no secret at this point that Microsoft is poised to unveil a sweeping cross-company reorg.

The elements that are unknown about the reorg are still numerous, however. There are conflicting rumors as to when it will be announced and which execs will move into which new roles. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft officials are not commenting at all on what's coming down the pike. I've held off on blogging about the reorg, hoping for more concrete and substantial tips. In their absence, I'll share a few things I have heard.
