Tabbed web browsing to debut in IE7

Tabbed web browsing is suddenly all the rage at Microsoft.

The company's Internet Explorer team said yesterday that its next version will come with the feature, a popular element of competing programs, including the upstart Firefox browser. Tabbed browsing lets users open multiple Web pages simultaneously inside a single window, then switch quickly among them by clicking on the associated tabs.

60,000 Microsoft employees to beta test OneCare

Microsoft Corp. is rolling out a test version of an all-in-one subscription service that aims to protect computer users from viruses and spyware, and give them tools to make machines speedier.

The software firm is distributing Windows OneCare to its 60,000 employees this week. It plans to run a larger invitation-only test this summer, then launch a full-scale test by year's end. It has not said when it would release the subscription service to consumers.

Microsoft promises secure Windows PCs

Microsoft will offer a new service that will protect Windows PCs from external attacks and offer maintenance as well as performance tuning in one package. Windows OneCare is currently tested by Microsoft employees, will be offered as broad public beta software thereafter and go commercial later this year.

iPod to Connect with Xbox 360

Microsoft may be battling the iPod on the digital music front, but on the gaming side Redmond has embraced its Apple rival. The Xbox 360 will enable users to connect a portable music player, including an iPod, to the system and browse or play back music through the console's interface while watching 50 visualizations.

Microsoft officially reveals Xbox 360

After weeks of cyber-gossip, we finally have definitive confirmation that the next-gen Xbox will be called Xbox 360 and that it will reach the US, Europe and Japan before Christmas.

The next issue of Edge magazine - which goes on sale this Tuesday (17 May) - features a massive eight-page expose of Microsoft's next console. As well as confirming that Xbox 360 will house many of the functions that had been rumoured, the magazine also exclusively reveals a slew of hitherto unknown information about the machine.

Microsoft 'maximum severity' alert: Users urged to patch immediately

Microsoft has warned of a flaw in its Windows operating system that could be exploited by hackers to remotely run malicious applications on a victim's PC.

The Redmond giant explained that the remote code execution vulnerability, which it rates "maximum severity rating: important", concerns the way that Web View in Windows Explorer handles certain HTML characters in preview fields.

Microsoft Quashes 'GreyMagic' Bug

Microsoft shipped its 24th security bulletin for 2005 on Tuesday with a fix for a well-known—and potentially dangerous—flaw in the Windows 2000 operating system. The patch arrives three weeks after the public release of a proof-of-concept exploit by Israel's GreyMagic Software and carries a maximum severity rating of "important."

According to Microsoft Corp.'s MS05-024 bulletin, the vulnerability could allow attackers to take "complete control of an affected system."

Can’t tell you how we got our hands on this image, but what you’re looking at is a real live shot of the Xbox 360 that someone sneakily snapped with their cameraphone at Microsoft’s Xbox360 Revealed launch party in Los Angeles last night. Also note the presence of a hard drive attachment up top, the white controller, the Xbox Live headset, and what looks like that EyeToy-like camera peripheral we’ve been hearing about.
