Tabbed web browsing to debut in IE7
Tabbed web browsing is suddenly all the rage at Microsoft.
The company's Internet Explorer team said yesterday that its next version will come with the feature, a popular element of competing programs, including the upstart Firefox browser. Tabbed browsing lets users open multiple Web pages simultaneously inside a single window, then switch quickly among them by clicking on the associated tabs.
Many in the industry had expected the next version, IE 7, to include such a feature. But Microsoft's MSN team yesterday delivered a surprise -- saying that it, too, is working on a separate product that will also add tabbed browsing to Internet Explorer.
The open-source Firefox browser has been gradually chipping away at Internet Explorer's big market share. Analysts say the inclusion of tabbed browsing in Firefox, and the lack of it in Internet Explorer, is one of the factors driving the trend.
