Microsoft launched its much anticipated Windows 7 operating system last week to great fanfare. One of the features of Windows 7 is DirectX 11, which is a superset of DirectX 10.1 already used in Vista Service Pack 2.

Windows Vista introduced the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM), which allowed new features such as virtualized video memory and scheduling of concurrent graphics contexts. Windows 7 also uses WDDM, albeit a newer version.

To help thwart such efforts, Microsoft this week announced a new mitigation security utility for application developers and IT professionals. The Enhanced Mitigation Evaluation Toolkit (EMET), currently at Version 1.0.2, is conceived as an "extensible framework" that will include future mitigation technologies as they are released, according to a Microsoft blog.

Microsoft has pulled out of co-sponsoring an entire episode of Family Guy in order to promote Windows 7, ending up with egg on its face over the mis-managed marketing debacle.

Microsoft originally planned to sponsor "Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show" much to the annoyance of many hardcore Family Guy fans.

However, on attending the taping of the show, Microsoft execs became concerned that the content might not be appropriate to their desired audience, with riffs on such topics as "deaf people, the Holocaust, feminine hygiene and incest."

Hundreds of overseas PC users have reported issues upgrading their OS to Windows 7, but in New Zealand, Microsoft has received few serious complaints.
