This week we announced the immediate availability of the latest Windows Media audio and video technology for Linspire. It's an important first for Linux, since it means desktop Linux users can now watch the latest video news at Fox News and CNET, movie trailers on Yahoo!, and sample songs from sites like BMG Music with native, licensed and supported technology. The support spans Windows Media 8 and Windows Media 9, for both audio and video.

The Final Frontier: Hacking Sendmail

Common wisdom on Linux has it that recompiling the Linux kernel is the meanest test of a system administrator's skills. While it's true that messing with kernel modules isn't trivial, there's a higher peak: hacking sendmail's configuration file. This tip shows you how to ruin your mail system with ease.

Damn Small Linux 0.8.4 was released recently. Now, the Siag Office word processor and spreadsheet are included, there were adjustments to smbclient GUI; adjustments to the control panel for backup and more. We talked to John Andrews, founder of the DSL distribution last week and he opened up to us with enthusiasm on the project's future. DSL's main target is to run off business card CDs and/or USB keys (below 64 MBs of space). John is constantly trying to improve the space arranged in the distro so it never ends up being more than 50 MBs (compressed).

A security bulletin circulated on the Internet late Friday and warned Linux users of a "critical-critical" security hole that could compromise systems and allow root access to a remote attacker. The message and its "patch" were the return of a phishing hoax aimed at Linux users.

Linux Lab defuses Microsoft patent FUD

CEO Steve Ballmer reportedly fired a FUD missile at Microsoft's greatest rival today, suggesting that Linux violates 228 patents. Ballmer's alleged remarks badly misrepresent statements made in August by a Linux startup offering insurance against patent lawsuits. Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) CEO Stuart Cohen prepared a statement in response.

Ballmer made the comments at a meeting of Microsoft's Asian Government Leaders Forum in Singapore.

The software platform will initially be used in new phones to be released by top Japanese mobile phone carrier NTT DoCoMo , which was also involved in the development process.

"The main advantage of the new platform will be easy integration of advanced multi-media applications and efficient use of software," NEC spokeswoman Akiko Shikimori said.

Where is the 'plug-and-play' Linux office system?

Imagine a computer network for small businesses that costs less than half as much as most companies now spend on their desktops and servers, never needs expensive on-site service calls, and always has the latest software and security patches without the business owner even thinking about it. This has been technically feasible with Linux for at least five years, but no one has gone to the trouble of marketing it. I hope someone decides to build and sell a true "plug-and-play" Linux office computer system soon. It would revolutionize the way small businesses buy and use computers.

Novell has boasted that its newly released Linux Desktop 9 operating system (OS) will threaten Microsoft Windows on corporate desktops, but channel players disagree.

Novell, which started shipping the new OS last week through its partners, recently claimed its operating system contains as much security and reliability as Windows and is sufficiently developed to challenge the Microsoft platform.

"LWM's senior contributing analyst, Bill Claybrook, spoke with John Loiacono, executive vice president of Sun Microsystem's Software Group about his new job, and what he has in store for Sun's Linux strategy.

You replaced Jonathan Schwartz several months ago as Sun's software leader. Jonathan was very visible. Is this the way you are going to do it?
