DoCoMo opts for Linux phones
JAPANESE electronics giants NEC and Panasonic have jointly developed a Linux-based software platform which offers third-generation mobile phone users more services on their handsets.
The software platform will initially be used in new phones to be released by top Japanese mobile phone carrier NTT DoCoMo , which was also involved in the development process.
"The main advantage of the new platform will be easy integration of advanced multi-media applications and efficient use of software," NEC spokeswoman Akiko Shikimori said.
"End-users should be able to enjoy more sophisticated services and content on their mobile phones ... because Linux is an open source software, third-party software developers may be able to modify what we have and make it even better."
NEC, Panasonic and NTT DoCoMo began developing the new platform in August 2001.
