Maxtor brings out 133MBps hard drive interface

Maxtor has announced the release of the Ultra ATA/133 - the next generation of its hard drive interface.

Maxtor is calling the technology Fast Drives and says it boosts data transfer rates between the computer and the hard drive up to 133MBps - one-third faster than its Ultra ATA/100 technology.

Ultra ATA/133 is backward compatible with the existing ATA standard. PC users who want to upgrade from Ultra ATA/100 to Ultra ATA/133 will need to purchase a compliant adapter card or system motherboard along with the new hard drives.

Compaq has begun shipping a 1GHz version of its Alpha EV68 processor in its GS series of AlphaServers. The widely-anticipated introduction to the market of 1GHz copper-whoppers from Big Q is accompanied by enhancements to Tru64 Unix that allow the operating syst em that allow users the ability to mix 64-bit CPU speeds within a single system.

Improved workload management and support for online add-and-replacement of processors has also been added. Compaq also said that its low-end AlphaServer DS Series systems would now be available with an 833 MHz, 64-bit Alpha part.

Fujitsu to debut 128-CPU server

Fujitsu Technology Solutions will announce its new top-end Unix server Monday, a 128-processor behemoth that will put pressure on Sun Microsystems, IBM and Hewlett-Packard.

However, the new Primepower 2000 system is arriving months later than a planned April introduction and will go on sale in a shrinking market for servers that has spurred price-cutting and other aggressive competitive tactics. On top of that, Sun and IBM also have new top-end systems scheduled to debut this fall.

Kodak to bring photo CDs to DVD players

In a move that could greatly expand the number of people who can view digital images, Kodak announced a plan to allow people to view photo CDs on televisions via DVD players. Eastman Kodak is trying to expand the popularity of digital images by moving beyond the PC to the TV set.

The photography giant announced Tuesday an agreement with chipmaker LSI Logic to allow people to view photo CDs on televisions via DVD players. The move could greatly expand the number of people who can view digital images, IDC analyst Chris Chute said.
