Why are Insane Hardware projects so cool?

Hardware insane projects and web sites like spud web server, gameboy xtreme overclock or guide to breaking your computer are being developed every day. They are odd, nonsensical and unique. But in the other hand, they are cool, interesting and guru-made (only sometimes). Why are we so interested on this kind of stuff? How could you distinguish fakes?

L33tdawg: Am I supposed to come up with answers to those questions? Well as to why we're all interested in stuff like this, I think it's for the simple reason that it's DIFFERENT and it's not commercially available (i.e. if you pull of the hack, you'd probrably be one of a handful of people who have a hacked up, better than the origninal piece of hardware)... At least that's what appeals to me about stuff like this. It's that as well as sheer boredom, and the given opportunity to build something 'different'. Just my 0.01 cents.
