New device looks to stop DoS attacks at the source

Looking to move the fight against DOS (denial of service) attacks away from attack targets and back to their source, Cs3 Wednesday announced the release of its Reverse Firewall network device.

The Reverse Firewall sits between the Internet and the network it's protecting and limits the flow of outbound information from the network in order to prevent systems from being used for DoS attacks, said Krishnamurthy Narayanaswamy, Cs3 co-founder and CTO.

Compaq Computer Corp. today issued a worldwide voluntary recall of 1.4 million AC adapters that have been used in certain Compaq notebooks because of a problem that can cause the adapters and power cords to overheat.

Due to the potential fire hazard, Compaq launched the recall and replacement program, though there have only been five reported cases of actual adapter malfunction so far, the company said in a statement...

Sprint offers GPS-enabled cell phones

WASHINGTON--Sprint PCS on Monday will begin selling mobile telephones equipped to more precisely pinpoint a caller's location when 911 is dialed for help, although service will not be available until November and then only in one market.

Sprint, the nation's fourth-largest mobile telephone carrier, said it plans to launch the service in Rhode Island next month and expand to other areas in coordination public safety agencies.

Another half year has passed since NVIDIA's last 3D chip launch in spring 2001. Following the old tradition, NVIDIA is now introducing a beefed up version of its spring release chip. The new GeForce3 Titanium 500 will from now on be NVIDIA's 3D chip flagship, while GeForce3 Titanium 200 is meant to provide GeForce3 performance at a more attractive price point. GeForce2 Titanium is meant to offer GeForce2 Ultra performance at a low price.

According to this story from The Register, the movie and record industries are using the nations shock as a tool to sneak in the Security Systems Standards and Certification Act (SSSCA), a machiavellian copyright protection bill that forces copy-controlled hardware on all electronic items from PC's, to cell phones, to digital music players, to cameras.
