Samaritans go with Linux

Emotional support charity Samaritans has chosen Linux to provide it with more secure and powerful computer systems.
Linux is an alternative operating system to Microsoft's Windows and has been adopted widely in public sector projects around the world largely because of its reliability and low cost.

For charities such as the Samaritans new technology can be a vital part of the service it offers but there is little money to spend on it.

In fact, The Aberdeen Group is calling open-source and Linux software the new "poster child" for operating system security for the year of 2002.

IBM debuts new Linux-only server

IBM will announce a new low-end server Wednesday, its first Power processor-based system that can run the Linux operating system without needing IBM's AIX as well.
IBM's pSeries machines already are available with Linux but have also required AIX, IBM's version of Unix. Now, as expected, Big Blue has modified Linux sufficiently that its p630 servers will start up without AIX.

MandrakeSoft looks for "Refugees"

The 'Operating System Refugee Offer,' as it is known, is reminiscent of proprietary competitors' competitive upgrade offers, only it boasts an even more dramatic discount.

KernelTrap has interviewed Ingo Molnar who has been contributing to Linux kernel development since 1995 with an impressive list of accomplishments. Most recently his O(1) scheduler was merged into the 2.5 development kernel, as well as much work to enhance the handling of threads. Other highly visible contributions include software-RAID support and the in-kernel Tux web and FTP servers.
